Background Info

Samantha Akinyi was born in Rhonda on 26th of December in the year 2018. She is the Third Child of 34-year-old Mercy Akoth and Andrew Ciera’s five children. Samantha’s mother Mercy, is slightly mentally challenged and suffers from epilepsy.

Mercy was orphaned at a tender age leading to her marriage. She took it upon herself to raise her two sisters after the death of her parents. She got in a union with Andrew Ciera at the age of 17. Andrew and Mercy got their five children while still living in the Rhonda slums. Andrew was a construction casual labourer but very irresponsible with the wages he received He would spend all the money on alcohol and become violent on Mercy and the children. This forced Mercy move on and fend for her five children and her two sisters single-handedly.

Samantha’s mother (Mercy) is epileptic. Epilepsy medication is quite expensive for Mercy who gets along without taking them. In an attempt to feed Samantha and her siblings, Mercy has attempted various businesses but they fail due to the small capital and meagre profits. When Mercy goes to work, Samantha’s elder sister Cynthia, looks after the children until Mercy comes later in the night. At this time of day, Samantha barely get the required care since Cynthia is still a child herself. Samantha’s mother Mercy currently tomatoes around the streets of Nakuru. The meagre income is insufficient and cannot cover their food, shelter and clothing.

Due to their poor living conditions. Mercy’s two sisters were sexually exploited and got pregnant while in school and had to drop out. The young men responsible for the pregnancies took advantage of the ladies’ condition. They, later on, denied their responsibilities and went missing in action. This added a huge burden on Mercy’s weary back. She has infants in the house who need food and healthcare.

Edgel came in to relieve Mercy of her burdens. We took Samantha and her two elder sisters, thus cutting her expenditures. We also give the household some foodstuff. Samantha Akinyi was admitted to Edgel Academy in 2023 after an assessment at their home. She is eager and zealous to learn.
