Background Info

Blessing Mukulu was born in Rhonda Slums, Nakuru County. She was born on 15th August 2016. Her mother is Connie Ndunge and she has three elder siblings and a little brother. Blessing lives in Mwariki slum with her mother and siblings.

Blessing’s mother, Connie is a humble 37-year-old woman. Connie comes from one of the driest parts of Kenya called Kitui County. Due to poverty, Connie and her siblings could not afford to go to school. Connie travelled from her village to the city to look for work. She had no academic credentials or an identification card that could help in getting a sustainable job. The only work she got was being a house help. Her terms of employment were very oppressive as the workload that did not match the salary. Connie was depressed.

It was during this time that Connie met and fell in love with Blessing’s father. He was a hard-working casual labourer and they felt that they could build a family together. Being young and naïve, Connie was not aware of the importance of family planning. She gave birth to her six children in quick succession. Her husband gradually felt the weight of this rapidly growing family. He plunged into alcoholism and within no time became violent towards Blessing’s mother and the children. One day he left the home and has never returned, Connie and the children have never seen him.

Blessing and her siblings have been surviving in the slums with the little that their mother makes. Connie is never at home at night since she works as a waitress in a bar. Due to the nature of her job, Connie is looked down upon by her neighbors. Sometimes Blessing hears the negative comments said about her mother. Yet, Connie has no alternative but to keep working even though the little salary is barely enough for the children’s food, shelter and education. them at her mother’s house and vanished. Nothing is known about the father. Veronica has always been a troublesome child. Emily tried raising her well but failed, she abandoned the child with Emily and vanished. She got a second child and abandoned her again. Even though Emily is now old, she is forced to look for casual jobs to put food on the table for the family.

Blessing Mukulu was referred to us by a concerned neighbour who saw she had not joined any school despite being of age. Our assessment confirmed that Blessing was as needy as reported. She was admitted to EDGEL Academy in January 2023. she is a determined and active young girl.
