Background Info

Emmanuel Kipruto was born on 25th December 2017. He is the last child of Rose Njoki. Rose is 32 years old. She is a mother of five children. She is HIV positive. Rose was born and raised in a small village in Njoro sub county, Nakuru. She came from a humble family that lived on a small piece of land. Her family depended on selling the small products from their small farm. What they earned was too little that they could not afford their basic needs. Due to poverty, Rose was unable to attend school. When she was a teenager, she went to Njoro town to look for a job so as to take care of her siblings.

In Njoro, Rose decided to get married to a guy who had asked for her hand in marriage. After the marriage, she opted to quit the job and become a housewife. Rose was elated because she wanted to start a family with her husband. The couple was blessed with several children as the years went by. Kipruto was the last one to be born before the unprecedented moment in their family occurred, a sudden separation of the parents.

All the time she was married, Rose was not aware of her husband’s adulterous ways. While Rose was at home taking care of the children, her husband was meeting other women at various spots in the town. When she (Rose) got pregnant with Emmanuel, she was shocked to be told that she was HIV positive. The husband had infected her unknowingly. Rose was incredibly depressed. She separated from her horrifying husband and moved to Nakuru City to live with a relative.

Due to her illiteracy, Rose is unable to get a well-paying job. Furthermore, her health status does not allow her to do the heavy casual jobs for extended hours, yet these are the ones available. As a result, she struggles to get food on the table for her children. She now lives in the Rhonda slums with her children. Emmanuel Kipruto is sickly feeble due to lack of food. Additionally, he was not attending school when we came across his family during our frequent field assessments within the slums.

He was admitted to EDGEL in 2023.
