Background Info
Shallet Awuor was born on 21st September 2018, in Nakuru County, Kenya. She is the last child of Lillian Atieno. She has three siblings, Victor, Nelly, and Lionel. Shallet currently lives with her siblings and mother in Ponda-Mali slum, Nakuru County.
Shallet’s mother Lillian hails from a low-income family that could not afford basic needs. Lillian started seeking financial support from random men at an early age. She got pregnant with her first child at 14 years, Victor, but the man responsible did not marry her. Lillian fell in love with the second man who took her in as a wife. The man’s relatives despised Lillian and called her a prostitute for having a child at 14 years. The increased abuse made Lilian flee the home with Shallet’s siblings Nelly and Lionel.
Shallet’s mother (Lillian) decided to move to Nakuru to search of work. A friend helped her rent a small dilapidated room in the slum and survived on casual jobs. While settling down in Nakuru, Lilian met Shallet’s father who was working as a security guard. Lillian believed that this man would help her settle and support her. Months later, she fell pregnant and gave birth to Shallet. Shallet’s father could not support them with his meagre salary. He started abusing Lillian in front of the children. Shallet’s mother endured the abuse because of her inability to sustain herself and the children. Shallet’s father later abandoned the family.
Shallet’s mother keeps doing the random casual jobs but she is unable to provide food, clothing, and education for Shallet and her siblings. They live in a single dilapidated room whose mud walls frequently collapse, forcing them to use rags to cover the holes.
Shallet was admitted to EDGEL Academy in 2023 after an assessment at their home in Ponda Mali. This was after a concerned neighbour notified us of her miserable living conditions. We conducted an assessment at their home and discovered that Shallet is indeed needy. She was admitted at Edgel Mission. She is excited to be in school.
