Background Info

Salet Saquinoline was born in Nakuru County in the year 2017. She is the second third child of Mercy Onyango. Salet has three siblings Fiona, Bravin, and one-year-old Job. Salet is battling anaemia. She currently lives with her mother and siblings in Ponda-Mali slum of Nakuru.

Mercy (Salet’s mother) hails from Migori County. She comes from a very poor family. They could not afford her education, so she did not attend school. Salet’s mother struggled to find casual jobs around the village. She had no one to give her the right direction in life. She got her first child Fiona when she was a teenager. The man responsible for the pregnancy denied his association with it. Mercy was battered. She decided to start her own life in a new place, Naivasha town.

In Naivasha, Salet’s mother got in a romantic relationship with the man who hosted her. They ended up getting three children, Salet and her two brothers. He (Salet’s father) later abandoned the family after the responsibility outweighed his inconsistent income. Salet’s parents were not in a formal union therefore the man could not be held responsible by any authority. Mercy had to look after her children single-handedly. Considering her level of education, she could not secure any substantial job. She only managed simple casual jobs whose wages were far less than her expenditures. Life became unbearable in Naivasha and so Mercy relocated to Nakuru with the help of a relative.

In Nakuru, Salet’s mother worked as a cook in a hotel, but she later left due to health problems. She now works as a maid in people's houses. Her income cannot satisfy the needs of her family more so the medical needs of Salet. Anaemia is a demanding disease that requires nutrition and constant care. Salet is unable to get nutritious food and her mother’s care since her mother has to work the whole day. As a result, Salet gets dangerously sick to an extent of being unable to walk. The family depends on family and friends to get through life. Their extended family is also poor, so they do not get much help.

During the assessment, we found Salet in a shocking condition as she was pale, with yellowing eyes and a swollen face. We started by getting her to the hospital for medication. Salet was admitted to EDGEL Academy in 2023. Salet is joyful and fun loving.
