Background Info

Rosina Ndinda was born on 16th March 2018. Rosina is the last child of 47-year-old Elizabeth Mwende. She was born in Mwariki slum of Nakuru County where she still lives with her mother and siblings.

Rosina’s mother Elizabeth comes the Rift-Valley part of Kenya. She hails from a very poor family that struggled with their daily basic needs. Elizabeth is uneducated and had to start working at a young age to support her poor family. Her first job was as a house help. She sent back home all the money she got from this job. Elizabeth, in the meantime, got into a secret relationship with her boss’ son. She got pregnant much to the dismay of her employer. They sent her away with an agreement that they will come for the baby once it was born. Elizabeth willingly gave out the baby because she was incapable of raising the child in her poverty-stricken home.

During the 2007 post-election violence in Kenya, Elizabeth’s home was set on fire by a rival political community. They fled to Central Kenya but Elizabeth came to Nakuru to look for work. She met and fell in love with Rosina’s father, Cosmas Munyau. Elizabeth was excited to make a home and take care of her family. She gave birth to three children with Rosina being their last. Cosmas would sell crafts to tourists around Lake Nakuru. Unfortunately, the COVID-2019 led to the collapse of his business. Cosmas became a bitter and depressed person. He would drink alcohol with every little money he got and then go back home to beat up Elizabeth. Rosina witnessed the frequent fights between her parents but she was too young to help. They lacked basic needs in house and still had to face their father’s anger. Rosina’s father would throw them (Rosina, her siblings and their mother) out of the house in the wee hours of the night. They would sleep in the cold in market stalls. Sometimes they would sleep at the police station since the police were unable to intervene in the domestic issue. This became an occasional event in Rosina’s life until her mother decided to move and rent a small room in Mwariki slum of her own.

Rosina’s case was referred to us by her mother’s friend who witnessed the violence in the home. We visited Rosina for an assessment and confirmed the concerns. We admitted Rosina at EDGEL Academy in 2023. She is a bright and smart learner.
