Background Info

Brighton Adebe was born on 28th March 2017 in Nakuru County, Kenya. He is the last child of Margaret Kusa. Brighton has five elder siblings. The family lives in Kwa-Rhonda slums of Nakuru County.

Brighton’s mother (Margaret) grew up in the Western part of Kenya. She came from a large family comprising of her father, his three wives, and several children. The large family struggled to obtain the basic needs. The food harvested from the farm was barely enough for all of them. Poverty became a basis of constant conflicts in the family. The co-wives and step-siblings would argue many times making the home uncomfortable. This stressful environment sent Margaret into an early marriage.

Brighton’s parents met back in the village. They had a traditional wedding and started living together. The family started growing with one child after the other. The family relocated to Nakuru County just before Brighton was born. In Nakuru County, Brighton’s parents did not get any work since they are both not educated. Brighton’s father would take up causal jobs to feed the family. These casual jobs are low paying making it hard for the family to cater for their daily needs. Unfortunately, Brighton’s parents developed health issues that made them unable to work. His father was involved in an accident that made him disabled. This condition kept him from involving in the demanding casual jobs. Brighton’s mother on the other hand also suffers from health issues including a growth on her neck.

Brighton and his siblings had to find a way to survive. Brighton’s elder brother dropped out of school to help the family but he died in an accident. The family now looks up to Brighton’s other brother who also dropped out of school to take up casual jobs. The little he gets is supposed to cater for the family’s basic needs and their parent’s medication. The family survives on donations from relatives and neighbours.

Edgel Mission visited Brighton at his home after his mother visited us asking for help. We were able to assess him and concluded that he needed our help. He was admitted into Edgel Mission in 2023. Brighton is a happy little boy.
