Background Info

Rose Aiyeta was born on 11th August 2017. She is the second child of Veronica Mmbone. She has an elder and younger brother. Rose and her siblings live in Rhonda slum, Nakuru County with their mother.

Veronica (Rose’s mother) is 24 years old. Veronica grew up in a poor family in a slum in Nakuru. She was a vibrant girl who wished for a better future. However, her hopes were overshadowed by the poverty situation in her home. They would struggle with everything including food and clothes. This situation made Veronica and her siblings to earnestly seek a way out of poverty. Veronica started dating at an early age. She also got into groups of friends where she met Rose’s father Peter. The ‘couple’ would run away to go to parties and events.

Peter (Rose’s father) was a casual worker earning a meagre salary. Being young, the couple believed that they had all they needed to live happily. However, things started falling apart as they got children. They realized that they were not as equipped to be parents as they thought. Rose’s father still insisted on going to parties as they had done before, while Veronica struggled with the children. Also, What Peter made was too little to sustain them and his partying habits. This led to constant quarreling in the home. Rose’s father felt that Veronica was nagging him, he became violent to her and opted for a break-up. Since this was not a formal union, the police could not help Veronica.

Rose, her siblings and mother were hosted by Rose’s aunt. Rose’s aunt has no job which makes life harder for them since she too depends on Veronica (Rose’s mother). They rarely have enough food and clothing. Rose’s father Peter does not help his children in any way. The heavy burden fully falls on Veronica’s shoulders. Veronica is currently trying her best through doing some casual jobs in order to provide for her children. However, what she makes cannot adequately sustain the family. This kept Rose and her siblings out of school for a long time.

We admitted Rose to EDGEL Academy in 2023 after an assessment at their home. She was late in joining pre-primary but is catching up well.
