Background Info

Shantel Akinyi was born on 30th May 2017. She was born in Busia County, Western Kenya. Shantel lives with her aunt Elizabeth Achieng and siblings in Mwariki slum, Nakuru County.

Shantel’s parents are unknown to her. Her mother is mentally unstable and her father’s whereabouts are unknown. When Shantel was born in the village, there was no one to take care of her. Her aunt Elizabeth Achieng’ took Shantel to Nakuru to raise her as her own.

Shantel’s aunt Elizabeth was a casual laborer with an unstable income. She is a single mother of four so adding a newborn to her already large family was overwhelming. It was hard for Shantel’s aunt to provide for the family’s basic needs from the little money she got. Due to the financial situation in the home, Shantel’s aunt was also unable to educate her own children. When Shantel was old enough to go school, she could not be enrolled and had to roam around the slum as her peers went to school.

Edgel Mission was made aware of Shantel’s plight when her aunt visited us looking for help. We assessed Shantel and realized the overwhelming condition she was living in. Shantel Akinyi was enrolled in EDGEL Academy in 2023. She is a dedicated little girl.

Shantel needs a sponsor.
