Background Info

Susan Akinyi was born on 15th October 2015. She is the first child of Lilian Awour. Susan has a younger sister, Melvin Atieno. Most details about their birth and father are unknown because their mother is irresponsible. Susan and her sister live with their grandmother Matilda Atieno in Rhonda slum in Nakuru.

Susan was abandoned at her grandmother’s place immediately after her birth. Her mother left and her whereabouts were unknown. She only showed up again when bringing Susan’s younger sister whom she also abandoned. Melvin and her sister cannot identify their mother and only consider her a distant relative.

Susan’s grandmother Matilda Atieno is almost 60 years old. She is employed in a small food ‘kiosk’ where she has to work every day of the week to earn a small daily wage. This leaves her no time to care for Susan and her sister. Sometimes Matilda would bring Melvin and her siblings to work while sometimes she would leave them unattended at home. The money that Matilda makes is still very little, it can barely meet their daily expenditures. Melvin’s uncle would occasionally help pay their bills but unfortunately he died in early 2023, a few days after Edgel Mission assessed Melvin.

Susan and her sister were referred to us by the community. People around them were concerned because the girls were old enough to be in school but were always seen at home or at their grandmother’s workplace. Susan was born in 2015 but has to be in the pre-primary 2 class meant for children born in 2017. She was admitted at Edgel Academy in 2023. She hard-working and determined to learn.
