Background Info

Joash Mokaya is the first child of Judy Njeri. He was born on the tenth July 2017 in Kisii County, Kenya. Joash has a younger sister called Miriam. The two live with their mother Judy in Rhonda slum.

Joash’s mother Judy is 23 years old. She was born and raised in the Rift Valley of Kenya. She had to drop out of school since her parents could not afford to educate her. Judy had to leave her village to look for a job to support her family. She found herself in Kisii County, Kenya, working as a house girl. This is where she met a Joash’s father. They got in a romantic relationship and agreed to settle down. Joash’s father was a casual labourer who did not earn much. After the birth of Joash and his sister, the couple decided to move to Nakuru City to look for better opportunities.

The family’s arrival in Nakuru was not encouraging. Joash’s father still failed to get a job and had to look around for casual jobs. The family had no relative in the city so they had no one to ask or help. When Joash’s father failed to get some money, they would go to bed hungry. The desperation led to Joash’s father becoming a drunkard and violent at home. After a few years of fighting, Joash’s mother left with the two children. Joash and his family moved into a small dilapidated room in the slum where they strive to get on day by day. Joash’s father visits the home but he is unable to help them as he is still unemployed and a drunkard. Joash’s mother goes around Nakuru town looking for any job she can get. Joash would be left at home to take care of his younger sister. As a result of lack of food and poor nutrition, Joash is a sickly boy with a poor immune system.

Edgel Mission visited Joash at his home to assess his living condition. This was after he visited the centre several times asking for something to eat. We found him in need of our help. He was admitted into Edgel Mission in 2023. Joash is an active little boy.
