Background Info

Precious Nanjala was born in Nakuru County, in the year 2018. She is the only child of a teenage mother, Naomi Nasimiyu. Precious stays with her elderly and widowed grandmother, Emily, alongside her four cousins in Kwa Rhonda slums, Nakuru.

Naomi (Precious’ mother) is Emily’s second born daughter. She dropped out of school due to extreme poverty in their family. As a result, she got sexually exploited by men in her quest for financial security. It was in this pursuit that she got pregnant with Precious Nanjala. Emily nursed her expectant daughter until she gave birth.

After her birth, Precious enjoyed her mothers’ company for only two months after which she was abandoned. This forced Emily (Precious’ grandmother) to take up the role of caring for her despite her many other responsibilities. She had to look after her three children and two other grandchildren. Emily does not have a sustainable job. She can only get seasonal casual jobs like house laundry with very meagre payments. Considering her age, Emily’s productivity is extremely low, earning her even lower wages.

The little money Emily gets is barely enough to cater to Precious’ basic needs as well as for the other children. For this reason, the family barely gets enough to eat for the day. When we went for an assessment at their home, we noticed that the children were extremely malnourished due to a lack of food. Precious’ condition was the worst among them all. They had spent a couple of previous nights without food. Emily has tried reducing the burden upon her but has not succeeded.

While Emily wants the best life for these children including Precious, she is desperately unable to give it. The prevailing financial situation cannot allow her. EDGeL saw this need and took up Precious into its program. She was admitted in the year 2023, and her health has tremendously improved. She is indeed a precious little girl.
