Background Info

Kevin was born on 10th May 2016 in Siaya County, Kenya. He has more than five elder siblings with different mothers. Some of these siblings are unknown to him. Kevin currently lives with his ailing Aunt Miriam Akinyi in Nakuru County. His mother is unknown.

When Kevin was conceived, his mother and father were not officially married. Kevin’s father had a history of getting in countless relationships with women and abandoning them when he was no longer interested in the relationship. The family later realized that he was suffering from mental illness.

His (Kevin fathers’) family was unable to take him for treatment due to poverty. They were also unable to control the unending romantic relationships he was continuously forming with women. Kevin is a result of one of these relationships. His mother (Kevin’s mother) was not aware of the man’s mental condition. Kevin was born a heathy child but was abandoned after his mother realized that she was not compatible with the man. The family, including Miriam (Kevin’s Aunt) were aware of this possibility since other women had also brought back their children. They all claimed that Kevin’s father was responsible.

Kevin’s current guardian (Miriam) is a sister to Kevin’s father. She is 50 years old. She volunteered to take care of Kevin despite her poor living condition. She took up the responsibility since no one among the relatives was willing to care for him. Miriam but struggles every day to fend for him and herself. By the time Kevin was of school going age in 2021, Miriam was unable to enrol him. Additionally, her age limits her ability to get casual jobs since clients only want young and energetic individuals.

Kevin was referred to us by the community at a time when Miriam was almost giving up. They had been thrown out of their house due to rent arrears. They were now being temporarily hosted by a friend. They were also struggling to find something to eat. Kevin was admitted to EDGEL Academy in pre-primary two. He is one of the oldest in the class but he is determined and hard working.
