Background Info

Brighton Njoroge is the last child in the family of seven. He was born in the year 2015. He has two sisters and four brothers. They are John, Anthony, Godfrey, Humphrey, Priya and Monica. Currently, Brighton lives with his blind and lame grandmother (Rose Waceke) in Mwariki slums here in Nakuru.

Brighton's mother is Mary Wanjiru. Mary is mentally incapacitated and therefore cannot work. Mary gave birth to her children while living with her parents. They used to live in Kisumu County, a place dominated by the Luo community. During the 2007 Post-election violent period, Brighton's family was targeted since they are from the rival political community. Bright's two uncles were hacked to death, while his grandfather died in an accident in an attempt to escape the attackers. His grandmother (Rose Waceke) was injured in the eyes in the process of escaping the violence. All their properties including a business and a car were set on fire leaving the family in poverty. Brighton was born after the family relocated to Nakuru County as internally displaced people.

Brighton lives with his blind grandmother who is also physically disabled. The grandmother is obese and cannot move from one place to another without help. The family fully depends on well-wishers since Brighton’s uncles and grandfather died during the violent attacks. The single room the family lives in is limited in space for the seven people.

Edgel Mission was notified of Brighton’s case by his teacher when we visited our beneficiaries where he schools (Kibowen Komen Primary school). We assessed Brighton both at home and at school and found him in need of our help. Brighton was admitted at Edgel Mission in 2022. He is a brilliant young boy.
