Background Info

Favour Atieno was born on 24th January 2017 in Nakuru, Kenya. She is the third born of Mercy Vingehi and Hezron Anzaya. Favour has two elder siblings; two brothers. Evra and Gabriel Agumbe. Evra was born in 2010 while Gabriel in 2013.

Mercy Vingehi (Favour’s mother) is a 28-year-old single mother. Mercy dropped out of school in class 8. She thereafter got pregnant with Evra while staying with her aunt. The aunt did not know the baby’s father. In anger, she chased Mercy from home. Mercy had nowhere to go except to her sister in Nakuru.

The heavily pregnant Mercy relocated to Nakuru in the year 2010. Her sister was a bartender at a local bar in the city. This job that did not pay much but Mercy’s sister took care of her. Unfortunately, after the delivery of the baby, Mercy’s sister died. Mercy was traumatized by the sudden death of the only person she depended on. She had many needs, but no one was there to provide for her any more. It was during these tough times that Mercy met and got in a relationship with Favour's father Hezron Anzaya. The couple (Mercy and Hezron) got two children, Gabriel and Favour.

Shortly after the birth of Favour, her father Hezron had become an abusive alcoholic. He ceased to provide for the family and often threatened to kill the family using a machete. Due to the death threats, Favour's elder brother ran away from home. Shortly after, Favour's mother left the union with Favour and Gabriel in a bid to shield the children from the emotional torture of constant exposure to domestic violence. Favour and his brother fully depended on her single mother tasked with the responsibility of providing for them. Favour's mother earns very little money from her casual job. The stress of providing for them (the children) has caused Favour's mother to develop depression. She has been seeking help in educating her children, especially Favor, who had not joined school.

EDGeL learnt of Favour via a concerned member of the slum community. Favour was enrolled into the organization after an assessment was conducted at their home. Favour is a hard-working and pleasant young lady.
