Background Info

Blessing Wanjiru was born on 23rd September, 2015. She is the first born of the 29year old Ruth Njeri. She has two brothers; Divine and Trevor. All these have different fathers. Currently, Blessing lives with her mother (Ruth Njeri) and brothers in Ponda Mali slum, Nakuru, Kenya.

Ruth Njeri (Blessing's Mother) was orphaned at a young age after her single mother died from HIV. Ruth had to drop out of school since her relatives were unable to educate her. She was forced to start looking for a job at a young age to get her basic needs. Ruth was unable to get a sustainable job and in the process got exploited by men sine she was young, beautiful and naïve. She gave birth to Blessing in 2015 but the man responsible moved away and never talked to her again. Blessing's mother lived with an uncle in a home that she was not welcomed. She found another man who expressed interest in her only for him to then abandon her when she was pregnant with Blessing's brother (Divine).

Blessing and her mother were abandoned in a small house in the slums where they had to survive on the little their mother (Ruth) made. Blessing’s mother (Ruth) would go around looking for casual jobs to afford a meal for the children. Most times, she would go back home empty-handed forcing Blessing and her brother to sleep hungry. Blessing was still a little girl but she had to take up the role of taking care of her brother (Divine). Blessing’s mother got a poorly paying work in a bar, a place where she met many men who expressed interest in her. She got pregnant with her youngest child (Trevor) but the man abandoned her again. Ruth was left perplexed and sank in depression. She lost her job and could not afford to take Blessing to school.

Blessing’s case was referred to us by an observant friend who identified her deteriorating mental state. Blessing’s mother (Ruth) was on the verge of giving away her youngest son (Trevor) because she was unable to look after or provide for the children. During our assessment, Blessing’s mother confessed that she wanted to sell Trevor after being overwhelmed by the traumatizing experiences. Our team intervened and decided to take in both Blessing and Divine, relieving her of the burden on her shoulder. Blessing was admitted to Edgel Mission in 2022.
