Background Info

Reumy Junior was born on 25th February 2012. Reumy is an orphan. He is also a child with special needs. He is deaf and cannot speak. Reumy’s mother and father met in the year 2011 in Kisumu. His father was then a technical institution student. The mother was still in high school. Their relationship was short. But the girl got pregnant. Reumy’s father was unable to marry the girl. He had no job. He was also afraid of disappointing his single and old mother. After Reumy was born, his mother brought him to his father’s home in Kisumu. She did not find Reumy’s father at home. She abandoned Reumy and disappeared. Reumy was just three days old. The grandmother did not have an option. She took up the role of raising Reumy. Reumy’s father did not land any job after school. He was depressed.

There was never enough at home for the family and baby. When Reumy was three years old, his father committed suicide. Reumy’s grandmother continued taking care of him. After two years, she also passed on. Reumy did not have anywhere else to go. His aunt Emma Awour took him to Nakuru County. Emma was married to an Army officer. They had two children. Emma’s second born also has special needs. She has cerebral palsy. Her husband took Reumy to Ngala School for the Deaf. Three years later, Emma got another child. The same year, her husband got into a fatal accident. The accident was so bad. He was left with a permanent brain damage. He needed Emma’s care around the clock. His work as an Army officer was over.

Emma’s husband had taken a loan. He was, therefore, awarded very little money. The money he got was not enough for his daily medication. It was also not enough for the family’s food. Emma also had the burden of caring for her sick child. Months later, Emma’s in-laws ambushed her. They took her ill husband and everything in the House. Emma, her three children, and Reumy had no place to live. Emma hoped that Reumy will have some peace at the school. This was not the case.

Reumy had a large sum of fee arrears (KES 51,000). The school had to send him home. They are hosted by Emma’s friend. Emmah is expected some money for the room every month. She is not able to raise this money. Reumy was recommended to EDGEL by the school Bursar. We assessed Reumy where he lives with his aunt and cousins. We got him back to Ngala School for the Deaf in 2022.
