Background Info

Esther Mumbi was born in 2017, in Mwariki slums in Nakuru County, Kenya. She is the only child of Mary Wambui. Esther and her Mother (Mary) currently live with her grandparents in Kwa Rhonda slums.

Mary (Esther's Mother) is single and unemployed. She dropped out of primary school due to poverty and constant abuses from the father. Being young and uneducated, she could not get a sustainable job. Hoping to escape poverty, Mary decided to cohabit with a boy she had known for a short time. Within months, she got pregnant and gave birth to Esther.

The informal union between Mary (Esther’s Mother) and her boyfriend (Esther’s father) did not last long. It ended when Esther was just two years old. Mary and her boyfriend (Esther father) broke up because he (Mary’s boyfriend) was irresponsible and violent. The little he earned was entirely spent on illicit drugs and alcohol. Mary returned to her parents’ home with her two-year-old Esther.

At her grandparent’s home, Esther experienced a lot of challenges. She inevitably suffered her mothers’ plight since the mother was constantly treated with great contempt by her biological parents, especially her father. Mary was considered useless by her father because she was not educated and was also unemployed. They offered no financial help to her (Mary), and hence she was unable to provide for her daughter (Esther).

EDGeL Mission conducted an assessment at Esther’s home after receiving a referral from their neighbor. In this assessment, Esther appeared depressed and malnourished due to lack of proper nutrition. Her situation was considered dire and in need of intervention. Esther was considered for admission as one of the beneficiaries of Edgel Mission in the year 2020. Esther is brilliant and optimistic.
