Background Info

Esther Muthoni was born on 15th April 2015. She was born in Nakuru County. She is the ninth child of Ann Wanjiku. Esther currently lives in Kwa-Rhonda slums with her mother and siblings.

Esther's Mother (Ann) is a 45 years old mother of ten and a widow having lost two husbands to TB and an accident. Additionally, Esther,s mother is also uneducated and unemployed. Ann grew up in an impoverished home with her grandmother after being abandoned by her mother. She never set foot in class. She moved from the village to Nakuru County to work as a house help and later met a construction worker and got in an informal union with him. The union resulted in eight children before her partner died of TB. Ann later got married to Esther's father and got Esther and her brother Abraham before Esther's father died in an accident.

Growing up with an uneducated and unemployed mother exposed Esther to many challenges. Esther’s mother used do casual jobs in people’s farms but is currently is unable to work at the moment because of health issues. Esther’s elder siblings are not educated. They roam around the slum drinking illicit brews and exposing Esther to the vulgar results of their alcoholic behaviours. One of Esther’s sibling is disabled ad immobile. Esther has to help look after her and the other children that live in the home. Additionally, Esther has also suffered some health issues due to negligence because her mother is in a church that forbids her from seeking medical intervention.

Edgel Mission conducted an assessment of Esther’s home in 2018 after a referral from a neighbour. We found the family in a pathetic state with Esther and the other children developing malnutrit6ion. Esther was admitted to Prince of Peace in 2019. She is dedicated and focused.
