Background Info
Ajidio Kihara was born in Nakuru County in the year 2014. He is the fifth child of Janet Nyambura. He has two sisters and three brothers. They live with their mother in Ponda-Mali slum, in Nakuru-West sub-county in a very stuffy little house.
Janet, (Ajidio’s mother) got divorced after a long stay in an abusive marriage. She had to run away from this marriage with all her children in fear of their lives. Ajidio’s mother (Janet) is an orphan so she did not have a home to run to. She rented a small dilapidated room in Ponda-Mali slums to live with her children. Ajidio’s mother became a hawker in Nakuru town, selling sweets and crisps to be able to care for herself and her dependents. The income from this job is very meager that it could not fully cover their household expenses.
Ajidio would often be left hungry at home for long hours looking after his younger brother. Ajidio’s elder’s brothers dropped out of school due to the financial strains that the family went through. They got into hustling to relieve their already overburdened mother from her weighty responsibilities. With their little education, they only got low paying jobs. Ajidio’s sisters are still in primary school but are likely to drop out of school. The poverty situation at their home is likely to make them a target of sexual exploitation for material needs. If such happens, Ajidio’s sisters will get in the same vicious cycle of poverty that their mother is experiencing.
Edgel Mission conducted an assessment of Ajidio’s home in 2019. We found him in need of our support. He was admitted to Prince of peace school in the year 2020. He is currently in pre-primary one. He is outgoing and always wants to learn more.
