Background Info

Jen Carlos was born in 2014 in Nakuru County, Kenya. He is the only child of Ann Mugure. Carlos lives with his mother in Kwa-Rhonda slum, Nakuru County.

Ann (Carlos’ mother) comes from a poor family where she was raised by a single mother in the slum that she still lives in. Carlos’ mother witnessed her mother suffering to feed then to an extent of begging relatives to help her educate Ann and her siblings. The family lacked simple basic needs, including food. This made Carlos’ mother and her siblings frequent visitors of anyone who would feed them. At 16 years, Ann fell victim to a man who took advantage of the situation and sexually exploited her. He would entice her with food and sanitary towels, and captured Ann’s trust. It did not take long for Ann to discover that she was pregnant.

Carlos was born at his grandmother’s dilapidated home in the slum. Carlos’ father was no longer in his life as he abandoned Ann immediately he heard of the pregnancy. His mother (Ann) had to drop out of school since the uncle who was educating her considered her a prostitute. The relationship between Carlos’ mother and grandmother deteriorated since Ann’s mother felt disappointed in her. They often quarrelled which made Carlos’ mother more and more depressed. Ann decided to rent a small room in the slum and take care of her child Carlos peacefully. She would walk around estates with Carlos on her back, looking for any job she could get. Sometimes she found low-paying casual jobs, and sometimes she came home without anything. The money she gets is only enough for the rent and a small meal. By the time Jen Carlos was old enough to be admitted to school, his mother Ann was unable to raise the requirements.

Edgel Mission has assessed Jen Carlos’s case and found him in need of support. He was admitted to EDGEL Mission in 2021. He is a jovial boy with hope for a brighter future.
