Background Info

Brian Ochieng was born in Nakuru County in the year 2013. He is the last Child of Doreen Achieng. Doreen has two children, Sandra and Brian. Brian was born a few months after his father died. Life as a widow and a mother was hard for Doreen.

She was not educated, so she could not find any meaningful work. She was also unable to look for casual jobs because she had just given birth. She depended on well-wishers for food. She would spend days hungry with her children. This desperate life made Doreen very depressed. She resorted to drinking alcohol and began being an irresponsible mother

The little money she got was all spent on cheap local alcohol. She was out the whole day and sometimes would not come back at night. Brian and his sister would spend the whole day hungry and dirty. This situation angered Doreen’s neighbours. The neighbours looked for Brian’s aunt Ruth Anyango who lived nearby. Ruth had to step in and help them financially. Later on, Ruth Anyango took Brian and his sister Sandra to her home in the Kwa-Rhonda slums. Ruth had no job, so adding two children under her care further increased her burden. She could only get low-paying casual jobs like being a housemaid. Ruth tried to provide a stable home for Brian and his sister but could not. Brian’s sister had to go and live with their equally poor grandmother in the village.

The sister eventually dropped out of high school while in form 3. She got married at a very young age. Ruth also had personal problems that made the home unstable for Brian and the other children. Her alcoholic husband would show up and beat her in front of Brian and the other children. On one occasion, the husband attacked Ruth so violently that Ruth had to break his arm to save herself. Their home is near our center. When Ruth heard about us, she came to ask us to help her take care of Brian. Brian was admitted to Prince of Peace School in 2020. He is a very talented boy with a desire to learn more.
