Background Info

Kevin Kahendo was born in Narok County in the year 2010. He is the first child of Elisabeth Nyambura. He has a younger sister Stacy Wambui. His mother, Elisabeth, separated from her husband when Kevin was nine years old. This was after years of abuse and domestic violence. Kevin’s father was an alcoholic. He worked odd jobs and spent all the money on alcohol. He would later come home and beat up Elizabeth in front of the children. It took Elisabeth a long time to leave the marriage because she was an orphan. She is also uneducated and finds it hard to get any job. Elisabeth had to endure the marriage. The abuse and violence increased every day. Sometimes she would be thrown out in the cold with the children.

On top of the violence, Elisabeth and the children did not have any food. They lived in a secluded place. Elisabeth did not have anyone around to ask for food. She decided to leave the marriage and return to her grandparent’s home. The old grandparents, John Njehia and Hannah Wangari, took them in. But they could not afford to provide for the additional dependents. Elisabeth left her children in the care of her ageing grandparents to seek a job in Nairobi. She only managed to get a job as a house help. She had hoped to settle down and come back for her children. However, her salary is too small to sustain her. She barely gets any money to send back home for the children. Kevin and Stacy live with their great grandparents in Kwa-Rhonda slums, Nakuru West subcounty.

John Njehia and Hannah Wangari were both casual labourers. They are currently unable to work due to age-related illnesses. John Njehia is 80 years old, while Hannah is 65. John is partially blind and can barely walk well. Hannah suffers from arthritis and back pain. They rely on well-wishers for survival. Hannah walks around encouraging people with the word of God. Sometimes she gets well-wishers who give her some food. John and the children depend on the food that Hannah comes back with. If she does not get anything, they sleep hungry. Kevin was admitted to Prince of Peace School in 2020 after an assessment of their home. Kevin is hardworking, friendly and very determined.
