Background Info

June Njeri Kanuthu was born in the year 2015 in Nakuru County, Kenya. June has a 12 year-old brother called Newton. June and her brother live with their grandmother Margaret Wairimu in the Rhonda slums.

June’s mother is Elizabeth Kanuthu. However, June and her brother have no connection with Elizabeth after she abandoned them at their impoverished grandmother’s home. June was six months old while her brother was 4. June’s mother left the home one day and never came back. Her whereabouts are unknown as she never communicates with her mother nor asks about the children. June’s grandmother (Margaret Wairimu) welcomed the children but she is unable to provide for them since she is unable to work.

June’s life is full of hardships including negligence, hunger, and lack of necessities. Her grandmother (Margret) is 62 years with HIV/AIDs hence prone to health issues that leave her body weak. Bing a widow, June’s grandmother has no one to support her and the dependents. Margaret was hopeful that someday June’s mother would show up and help her with the children but this did not happen. As a result of hopelessness, June’s grandmother became addicted to the illicit brew sold near her home. June and her brother were often left to fend for themselves and go looking for their drunk grandmother. June would be left alone walking around the slum which exposed her to sexual predators. June’s brother would beg for money on the streets so he could buy some food for the home. The children were unable to attend school.

Edgel Mission was notified of June’s plight by a concerned neighbour. Her assessment was disturbing since we mostly found her alone, dirty, and hungry at the home. June was admitted to Prince of Peace School in 2019 after profiling their home in Rhonda slums. She is cooperative and self-disciplined.
