Background Info

Esther Waithera was born in Gilgil, Nakuru County. Esther, together with two of her siblings are under our support program. Esther is the seventh born in a family of nine. Her mother is Lydia Wairimu. They currently live in the Kwa-Rhonda slums of Nakuru, Kenya.

Lydia (Esther’s mother) is a 40-year-old widow. Esther’s father died in 2014 when Esther was one year. The family accused Esther’s mother of being responsible for the death. They kicked her and all her children from the home empty-handed. Lydia had nowhere to go with the many children. With the help of her sister who lived in Nakuru County, she managed to rent a small dilapidated room in Kwa-Rhonda slum.

Esther and her siblings live a challenging life in the slum. Their uneducated mother (Lydia) is overwhelmed struggling to fend for the children without a reliable source of income. As a result, sometimes James’ mother gets into short-term relationships with different men hoping for financial support without luck. They all exploit her and leave. James’ mother suffers from severe Vitiligo which reduces her chance of getting casual jobs since people think it is a contagious disease. She tried hawking but was always avoided by people. Esther’s brothers have to hawk fruits around so that they can buy food with the little they get.

After Edgel Mission conducted an assessment of their home, we found Esther in dire need of support. Esther was admitted to Prince of peace school in 2019. She is currently in enrolled in school. Esther is intelligent.

Esther needs a sponsor.
