Background Info

Robert Omondi was born in Nakuru County in 2014. He is the fourth born child of Pamela Akinyi. He lives with his mother and his other siblings in Kwa Rhonda slums. One of his siblings is called James Ouma. James is a beneficiary at Edgel Mission. He has three other brothers and a sister.

Pamela is a 40-year-old single mother. She was married but lost her dear husband in 2017. Her husband was the sole provider of the household. Pamela used to be a stay-at-home mother. She wanted to see her children grow under the tender care of their mother.

After the death of her husband, Pamela was forced to get out of the home and look for a job. Pamela could have chosen the easy way. One of the relatives of her husband could have taken her as a second wife. Their culture demands that a widow should be married by the man’s brother. But Pamela never went down that road. She refused to be inherited and chose to look after her children. She decided to take up the role of her dead husband. This was a whole new experience for her. She has struggled a lot since then to make things work for her and her children. She works as a househelp, especially washing clothes for people in different households. She depends on well-wishers for support.

In her quest to fend for her family, Pamela has been leaving her two sons (Robert and James) alone at home. The other siblings were already going to school. Robert would look after James since he was the elder. This exposed them to a lot of danger in the slums. Pamela had a huge burden. She had to cater for food, school fees, clothing, house rent etc. all by herself. Edgel came in to relieve her. We took in two of her children. Robert was admitted to Prince of Peace School in the year 2019. He is currently in Pre-primary two. He is very hardworking.
