Background Info
Marion Kerubo was born in Njoro Sub-County, Nakuru, in the year 2015. She is the fourth-born daughter of Irene Chepchumba. Irene has six children. As we visited her, she was expectant with the 7th Child. Irene is 27 years old. She conceived her firstborn daughter at age 13. Irene had an unfortunate life. She was exposed to prostitution at a tender age.
She would have sex with men to get some money for her family. By the time she was 12 years, she already knew how to get money from men. Getting pregnant at 13 was lifechanging for her. She decided to try and change her life. She wanted to live a better life for her Child.
Things at home did not make it simple for her. She had been the breadwinner of the family. Her decision to stop prostitution made her family poorer. The only hope for Irene was marriage. Irene met Jared Amega, who was briefly working in her home town. Irene and Jared married shortly after. They moved into the Kwa-Rhonda slums and lived near Jared’s mother, Anna Mokeira. In the few years that followed, Irene was got six children. Since Jared was a casual labourer, he could not afford the family’s basic needs. Irene and Jared had an abusive relationship. They were constantly arguing and fighting. Samuel and his siblings moved in with their grandmother Anna Mokeira.
Anna is 63 years old. She is unable to work because she suffers from high blood pressure and arthritis. Jared tries to help her out with the expenses. But he is unable to help much because he earns so little. Jared is now an alcoholic. He only provides for them on rare occasions. Anna is hardworking. She has tried several businesses, but they fail. She relies on well-wishers for survival. Sometimes she occasionally sends her grandchildren to beg in the streets.
Marion was admitted to Prince of Peace School in January 2019. After conducting a field visit at their home, Marion was enrolled in pre-primary one and has since graduated from pre-primary two. Marion is very hardworking.
