Background Info
Meshack Mwangi was born on 10th March 2015 in KwaRhonda slums, Nakuru County. He is the last-born of Mary Kariuki and has an elder brother. Meshack lives with his mother, Mary in a small house. Mary is 52 years old. She cannot land a substantial job because she is uneducated. She dropped out of primary-level education because of poverty.
She later met a man and started a relationship with him. This led to her getting pregnant with her first son. Mary got pregnant when living with her poor old mother in Nyahururu, Kenya. Since they did not have food and other basic needs, Mary had to leave her son and look for greener pastures.
Mary moved to Nakuru and tried her luck in different casual jobs. She saved up little capital and started hawking in Nakuru town.
While struggling to make ends meet, Mary met and fell in love with a man called Daniel. They spent a short time together, and Mary found out that she was pregnant. She gave birth to Meshack. Mary also discovered that she had been infected with HIV. The same was true for her son Meshack. Their extremist faith dictates covering their heads and solely believing in the healing power of the Lord. They are not allowed to seek medical help or use drugs.
For this reason, the infected Mary and Daniel are in denial of their HIV/AIDS status. Meshack is denied the health requirements because of the parent's decisions. He gets attacked by HIV-related boils leaving visible scars all over his body. Meshack’s parents are always arguing whenever they meet. Whenever Meshack’s father shows up at home, he beats up Mary and Meshack.
Mary is not able to move to another place because she does not have a job or any finances. She has to endure domestic violence as she keeps hoping to land a casual job. Meshack Mwangi was admitted to Prince of Peace School in January 2019. We continue monitoring his health and providing the family with food support. We hope to get Meshack Mwangi the health intervention he needs.
