Background Info

Jennifer Njeri is Mary Wangari‘s last-born daughter. She was born on 11th October, 2014. Her three other siblings are Esther Wambui, Nancy Wairimu, and Mary Muthoni. They are all living with their elderly grandmother in Sewage, Nakuru.

Jennifer and her siblings are total orphans. Their father, Heman Gichohi died of Pneumonia in 2012 while their mother died in 2018. She was diagnosed with HIV/AIDS and TB which led to her death. Before dying, Mary Wangari, their mother went through a tough life. She dropped out of class eight in 2003 and was married the same year. During their marriage with Gichohi, they resided in Keringet, Nakuru.

A year later, they were blessed with their firstborn child Esther Wambui. Things did not appear to be bad until Gichohi started drinking alcohol. He thereafter became violent and frequently uttered death threats to Mary.Mary would often go back to her parent's place for refuge whenever Gichohi became violent. However, this would not take long before the husband came for her. He would utter nice words to Mary's parents, thereby gaining their trust. The parents would then release Mary to go back to her husband. They would stay for a while, and then Gichohi would revert to his initial behaviour. It was a cycle until he finally died. After his death, the in-laws rose against Mary. They decided to chase her away together with her children. They denied her all that belonged to her late husband, which was now supposed to be hers. Mary, therefore, decided to back home to her parents. Her parents were staying with other children in a small rental house. With Mary and her children, they were now eleven occupants in that little house. She started hustling. She hawked watermelon around Nakuru.

Mary did this business for some time, but her body started to waste away. She became too weak to continue hawking. Opportunistic diseases invaded her body. She resorted to staying at home, but a few months later, she died. She left her children with their grandmother. The grandmother is a casual worker. Her wages are way below her expenditures. Edgel identified this family after a fieldwork assessment at their home and decided to take in Jennifer and her elder sister Esther Wambui. Jennifer was admitted to Prince of peace school in the year 2019. She is currently in preprimary one. She can do better in her studies.
