Background Info
Emily Anyango is the last born of Imelda Adhiambo's two children. She was born in 2015 in the Rhonda slums. Emily lives with her mother and elder brother in a small mud house. The house is all Imelda can afford since she is a single mother. Imelda is 32 years old. She grew up in poverty, so she did not get any education.
After dropping out of school, she started doing some casual jobs so she could help out her poor mother. In the process, she met and fell in love with a middle-aged man. The man showered her with gifts and promises. Imelda felt comfortable in the relationship. She agreed to marry the man. Their marriage was rocky and full of secrets.
The man was mean to Imelda and kept abusing her. A few months after the marriage, Imelda fell pregnant with her first child. She endured the abuse in the marriage and got pregnant again with Emily. Things got worse when the man started abusing her physically. Imelda felt trapped in the marriage. She stayed because she did not have money to stand on her own.
When Emily was three months old, Imelda’s husband tricked her. He requested her to go and visit her mother back in the village. Imelda was an obedient wife; she travelled to her home with the children. They agreed that the husband would send her transport money to come back to Nakuru. He did not do as planned. Imelda waited for months.
Imelda decided to find a way to get back to her marital home. She travelled back when Emily was five months old. She found their house empty. Her husband had relocated to a different town. He had carried everything in the house. Imelda was shocked. She learned that Emily's father had lied to her. He was married to another woman before they met. They even had children older than Imelda’s children. Imelda knew nothing of this.
A friend briefly hosted her with her children. With help from family members, Imelda managed to rent a cheap dilapidated house. She had picked up a few skills in tailoring. She borrowed a sewing machine and set up a small business. She does clothing repairs by the roadside in her neighborhood. The little she earns is not enough to cater for her family's needs.
Emily was admitted to Prince of Peace School in 2019 after a period of assessment at their home. She is hardworking a very determined.
