Background Info
Juliet Atieno was born in Rhonda on in the year 2016. She is the second child of Mercy Akoth and Andrew Ciera’s three children. Juliet’s mother is 26 years old.
Mercy was orphaned at a tender age leading to her marriage. She took it upon herself to raise her two sisters after the death of her parents. Andrew is a casual labourer. He works at construction sites but is very irresponsible with the wages he receives. He is a drunkard. He spends all the money on alcohol. He only comes back to the house when he has exhausted the entire amount. This forces Mercy to fend for her five children and her two sisters single-handedly.
Mercy has attempted to do various businesses. She used to hawk roasted groundnuts, but the business did not last. She is currently selling tomatoes around the streets of Nakuru. She uses the income from this business to pay her rent, feed her dependents and cater to some other needs. The amount is, however very insufficient to cater for all these expenses.
Mercy goes to her job in the afternoon. At this time of day, Juliet’s elder sister Cynthia is at home. She looks after the siblings while the mother is away. She ensures their safety and that they are warm when it is cold. They barely have enough clothing on. They are staying in a very small house. This is the kind of house Mercy can afford, considering her income.
Mercy’s two sisters got pregnant while in school. They, therefore, had to drop out. The young men responsible for the pregnancies took advantage of the ladies’ condition and sexually exploited them. They, later on, denied their responsibilities and went missing in action. This added a huge burden on Mercy’s weary back. She has infants in the house who need food and healthcare. Mercy is also epileptic. She is currently on medication.
The medication is also quite expensive, and sometimes she gets along without taking them. Edgel came in to relieve Mercy of her many burdens. We took Cynthia Ariana, her firstborn, and Juliet thus cutting her expenditures. We also give the household some foodstuff. Juliet Atieno was admitted to Prince of Peace School in 2019 after a field assessment at their home. She is dedicated and focused.
