Background Info

Victoria Wanjiku was born in Nakuru County in the year 2014. She is the lastborn child of Nancy. Nancy has four children. Nancy survived a violent marriage. She met her ex-husband when she was 18 years old. They got into an informal marriage. Her husband was a hawker. Nancy got three children in this marriage. Life was hard for them because what the husband got was not enough. Nancy could not land any meaningful work because she was uneducated. Her husband was depressed and became addicted to alcohol. She turned violent on Nancy and the children. Nancy had to leave the marriage and go back to her home.

Her mother, Ruth Wanjiru was happy to have her safely back home. However, Ruth is taking care of many dependents at her home. She has orphans and children neglected by their single parents. Nancy and the rest of the dependents can barely get enough to eat. The adults in the house are trying to get casual jobs to find some food. They depend on luck, and sometimes the adults return home without anything. Nancy also found life in this home hard. She found solace in a man who provided her temporary hope. He promised to marry her and get her a good home. Nancy found herself pregnant and gave birth to Victoria in 2014. Victoria’s father disappeared when he heard that Nancy was pregnant. Nancy became desperate. The burden at home was too much. When Victoria was one year old, Nancy decided to look for work opportunities. She found an agent that took her to the Middle East (Saudi Arabia) for a job as a housemaid. Nancy earns a small salary. She can only afford to send a small amount back home to her mother, Ruth. The amount sent is still not enough for the large family’s food. Ruth still has to struggle to get the family a consistent meal. Currently, Victoria and the other children live with her grandmother in Kwa Rhonda slums, Nakuru County. Victoria struggles with an age-related illness. She is not able to engage in vigorous casual jobs. Victoria Wanjiku was admitted to Prince of Peace in January 2019. Victoria is a very hardworking girl.
