Background Info

Angeline Mukonyo was born in Kaptembwo, Nakuru County, Kenya. She was born in the year 2011. Angeline has two siblings. Her mother is Anna Ayuma. Angeline used to live with her parents and siblings in Kaptembwo, Nakuru county. Her mother Anne Ayuma and father were casual labourers. They barely got enough for food and other basic needs. Angeline’s father was an alcoholic and violent on his family. He would beat up Anna and the children when drunk.

Anna separated from her abusive husband and went back to her mother's place with the children. The husband remarried shortly after which frustrated Anna. She became depressed and neglected Angeline. She was no longer interested in fighting for a better life for her nor her children.

Anna wanders around the slums frequenting the alcohol dens Anna also engages in prostitution. However, the money she gets from this 'job' is all spent on alcohol. Currently, Angeline lives with her siblings and other young and older relatives at their grandmother's house. The large family survives in a small mud house in the Kwa-Rhonda slums. All the adults in the home, including Anna, are alcoholics with no jobs. The environment is unconducive for Angeline and the other children. The adults drink and smoke around the house. The children are also exposed to abusive words and immoral behaviours potrayed by the adults.

Angeline's grandmother is the sole breadwinner of this large family. This is hard for her because she is elderly and unemployed. She is also a drunkard, so, she only remembers the children when sober. When not drinking, Angeline's grandmother does casual work. She washes clothes for people around the elegant estates of Nakuru at a smalls fee. A greater proportion of this money earned is spent on alcohol. Angeline and her cousin Kevin Momanyi were rescued by EDGEL Misson after a reference from the community. They had never attended school despite being past school going age. Angeline was admitted to Prince of Peace School in 2019 after a field assessment at their home. She is talented and self-disciplined.
