Background Info

Sammy Wainaina was born in Nakuru County in the year 2014. He is the last child of Mary Muthoni. Mary has three children, Sammy and two older girls. Mary’s life was better some years ago. She was happily living with her husband and two daughters. Her husband would work and bring home a meal for the family.

Mary did not go to school. So she was not able to get employed. She only got low-paying casual jobs. With what she earned, she helped her husband care for the family. This happy marriage did not last long. Mary’s husband died in 2013. Mary was so devastated. She did not know what to do since she always depended on her husband’s support. A few days after she buried her husband, her in-laws invaded her home. They claimed that she had killed her husband.

Mary was so shocked. She had lived with these people for a long time. She thought they loved her as much as she loved them. They claimed that their son purchased everything in the house. They threw her out with the two girls and took everything she owned. Mary had nothing. She opted to go back to her home. Her mother gave her a single mud room to live in. The room is only enough for a bed and a chair. Mary had to arrange the room to fit her and her girls. Her mother could not help her with basic needs because she is old. Mary started doing some casual jobs around the area. Her daughters endured this hard life. One joined high school, and the other dropped out because of a lack of school fees. The girl in high school had to be hosted and educated by an aunt because Mary could not afford it. After some time, Mary started feeling lonely. She found solace in a man who expressed interest in her. It turned out that this man was only interested in being hosted by Mary. He was an alcoholic with no job or a house. Before Mary could do anything, she found herself pregnant. Mary could not do the casual jobs that put food on the table. The man disappeared. Mary gave birth to Sammy Wainaina. She depended on well-wishers to provide her with food. Mary has struggled to raise Sammy by doing any available job to cater to his basic needs. Sammy joined Prince of Peace School in 2019 after profiling their home. He is intelligent, respectful and self-disciplined.
