Background Info

Sharleen Mukeni was born in Rhonda slums, Nakuru County. She was born on 13th March 2013. She is the last child of Elizabeth Njoki. Elizabeth is 46 years old. She has six children. When growing up, Elizabeth enjoyed going to church and worshipping. She was an active youth and participated in all organized activities. This is where she met her fellow church mate, Stephen Maina. Elizabeth and Stephen gradually developed a relationship. They then decided to get married and live together. Stephen was a casual laborer. He worked hard to provide for his family. Elizabeth got their firstborn soon after the marriage. The couple added four more children. In the course of the relationship, Stephen's attitude started changing.

Due to his low income, Stephen saw his family as a burden. His income was less than the family's needs. Elizabeth was unable to get a job because she is uneducated. She tried helping her husband but could only get casual jobs with meagre payments. Due to the stress, Stephen became addicted to alcohol. He would show up at home every day drunk. As Stephen became addicted, he completely stopped supporting Elizabeth and the children. The little money he got was all spent on alcohol. Elizabeth got pregnant with Sharleen in 2013. Stephen was very annoyed. He started beating and verbally abusing Elizabeth frequently. He would beat and abuse her in front of the older children. Stephen would threaten to kill Elizabeth when screaming at her.

In 2014, Elizabeth decided to leave the marriage. She was afraid that Stephen would beat and kill them in one of his angry outbursts. Elizabeth borrowed some money from her family. She moved to another part of the Rhonda slums. She rented a dilapidated mud house that she could afford. She started surviving in this house with her six children. Her older daughter had stopped going to school. She wanted to help her mother look after the younger children. Her daughter got married to an abusive man and had to come back home with a grandchild. Elizabeth is now responsible for looking after all her children and the grandchild. Elizabeth was hired by the Prince of Peace School as the school cook. Her income is not enough to cater for all her dependent's needs. Sharleen joined the Prince of Peace in 2019 after a field assessment at their home. She is very talented and determined.
